Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust introduced a unique IT solution which integrates digital dictation with electronic delivery to hit 24 hour targets for delivering discharge communications to GP practices.

The electronic correspondence system automatically matches digitally dictated clinical notes with PAS patient details to produce an electronic clinic attendance letter or discharge summary at the touch of a button.

Consultants create customised workflows of outstanding dictation for their medical secretary. When opened the system automatically downloads the most up-to-date patient information from the Patient Administration System into a pre-populated letter template. The completed document is then forwarded to the consultant to review and sign off electronically and the authorised document is released for electronic delivery to the GP.

Following an initial pilot with eight clinicians in Ear, Nose and Throat and four surgeries, the integrated approach is now being rolled out across the whole of the Trust and to GP surgeries within the Doncaster and Bassetlaw areas.
